The great wheel weight debate. How important is rotational mass?
14 x 5.5 Inches, 11 Pounds. How about you?
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:02 |

Not lighter than that, but still relatively impressive...
15.4 lbs, 17x8.

Keith Bontrager said Light, Stong, Cheap. Pick Two. I know how important it is on a 20 poubd bike. But what’s 5-10 pounds on a 2000 pound car?
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:03 |

It makes a difference! Rotational mass is a mofo.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:04 |

That is still pretty damn light...less than 16 lbs.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:05 |

That said, cheap and strong if you’re racing.

M-Contours are 17x7.5in and weigh 22.3lbs in front and 17x8.5in and weigh 23.4lbs in the back.
Wow, those are heavier than I expected.

Yeah, though I’ve read multiple specs for the wheel weight, but it’s between 15.5 and 16.5. A fair upgrade from the stock wheels which were 23lbs each, and the new ones are an inch wider too.

I have 16x7 stamped/welded steel wheels, each one weighs approximately a whole lot. With tire (225/65) they weight approximately a bunch.

Pontiac said it best.

Truer words...especially appropriate for one of the only brands to ever release a reverse-staggered car (wider fronts than rears).

How many 1 arm bicep curls can you do holding a wheel? Wheel and tire?
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:10 |

THAT, I did not know. I was just referencing an old slogan.

4.0x12 steelies. 10.8 lbs a corner.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:13 |

Twelve inch wheels. Damn, son.

On average it’s stated that unsprung mass has 4x the impact of sprung mass when considering weight reduction. So a purchase like mine, going from 23lbs to 16 or so on all four corners, is 24lbs of real weight reduction and equal in impact to 100lbs anywhere else on the car.

135/80 R12 tyres represent!

Rotational mass matters: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/effec…
I can’t find it now, but another magazine did a track test with 3 different sizes on a BMW as well - same result.
My truck wheels probably weigh a lot. 17x7.5 with big tires, I know they’re heavy when I have to move them around...
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:15 |
|
The track wheels are 18x8 and around 18 lbs. Enkei doesn’t like saying how much and I can’t be bothered to weigh them.
The street wheels are also an 18x8 Enkei but are something silly like 26 lbs. Without tires.
It’s much easier to lift and put the track wheels on, I can say that much.

17x7, 20.5 lbs
Looking for recommendations for my NB that won’t kill my bank account (and have to be available in Ontario!)

Bicep curls! How many?

PHYSICS!
BJ is my nickname. Stands for, Bill(ly) James, ha.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:19 |

That would make a noticeable difference possible.
That gets me thinking of the flywheel hybrid systems. What if the flywheel, or wheels were articulated to act like traction and stability control?

Grand Prix GXP: 18x8 in the front, 18x7 in the back.

Hey, BJ is my nickname, too! ;-) Ha ha!
I dug up an old post of mine about EMM-PEE-GEES and wheels, it has the link I mentioned: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/lightweight-wh…

Not me. Ok with it.

17x7
23lbs

As the engineers intended it so.

Sounds OEM?
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:31 |

You can definitely tell when you swap wheels out with a lighter set, for sure!
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:31 |
|
Er, I’m the other way inclined - 16x7, 35lb
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:31 |
|
Yep. For now rocking the stock Si wheels
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:32 |
|
Agreed. I’m not tracking it, so I dont benefit. Also, everything else is stock, so why would I change the wheels? And those terrible wheels in the background is not my car. But other than the nasty chrome wheels, it is a very cool build. I’m all for ad grammar and stock wheels.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:34 |
|
That build would look good with some 80's “turbo fin” wheels.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:35 |
|
I’m sure those wheels are strong?
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:37 |

KEEP ALL YOUR STOCK PARTS. #wisdom
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:37 |

4850lbs per wheel, apparently.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:40 |
|
Well, I guess rotational mass isn’t your performance metric, haha.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:42 |
|
They’ll (the stock ones) be the fall/winter wheels if anything
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:43 |
|
It's like having 4 giant flywheels
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:46 |
|
Dude, you win, because of physics.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:49 |
|
You can go lower than that with the Enkei RPF1. I believe they’re less than 9 lbs while still being 14 x 6' width.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:50 |
|
Not willing to spend that much, haha.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 20:56 |

15x9. No I don't know how much they weigh
![]() 04/06/2016 at 21:07 |
|
19 x 9.5 ~27Lbs.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 21:32 |

Agreed. He won’t listen.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 22:00 |

Not very many
![]() 04/06/2016 at 22:06 |

15x6.5, 15.2lbs I really want under 12, but the moneys, she are many :(
![]() 04/06/2016 at 22:27 |

15 x 6.5 inches, 15.8 pounds. Stock ‘08 Fit Sport wheels.
![]() 04/06/2016 at 22:49 |

It looks hood early 90s...lol
![]() 04/06/2016 at 22:50 |

What wheels?
![]() 04/07/2016 at 08:24 |

MSW type 23, which are apparently no longer made in 15".
